The W-Project 2012 exhibition was called WORDS OF WISDOM which participating artists were asked to share on a postcard sized art piece. Aiming to celebrate, connect and inspire women working across the creative industries, and provide a platform for sharing knowledge, an exciting mix of female talent were invited to contribute a creative response to the question: what are your words of wisdom? The exhibition was tremendous, varied and I may have learnt something….

My Words of WisdomI thought it would be interesting to think about the Battle of the Somme, 1916. I read a fascinating paper written by evolutionary biologist Stephen Stearns, which you can read HERE. It’s a commentary, it’s unresolved, interesting and troubling. It questioned whether humans might be stuck in an evolutionary transition from individual to group (imagine wandering family groups eventually merging into an organisational structure much like that of insect colonies but never quite making it). Heavy words, Lightly thrown….So, this is interesting. - why do people volunteer to die for their countries? Or obey their leaders? Agree to pay taxes that help everyone and not just your instant kin? What about when culture and biology clash? Why do we want to have babies even though the planet is over populated? What about the explosion of auto-immune diseases (i.e. allergies, type 2 diabetes) and the hygiene hypothesis? Why do we get embarrassed and have a frightening impulse to conform? Why are social norms important to us and how do they (and to what extent, if at all) protect us?Meanwhile….Meanwhile on TWITTER, I discovered via Stevyn Colgan tht BRITNEY SPEARS was an anagram of PRESBYTERIANS. I was flabbeghasted.Heavy words lightly thrown indeed! I can not elaborate intellectually in one moment, what I mean to convey is that these questions interest me. The best I can do in a short space of time is read and respond with drawing. The anagram seemed to bring together some of what I had been reading of late, manifested in a word game on super egos, idols, gods and hierarchy - ALL collapsing under the voluptuous weight of some ginormous modified glands. I chose to make visual references to some of the most ridiculous images found in illustrious mediaeval manuscripts on display at the British Library - commissioned by royalty as a reflection of their connection to the devine.
I suppose my words of wisdom are unresolved - although I hope they suggest we pause and take a closer look at things and NOT take our selves too seriously.blog.© Jennifer Crouch 2012
